Selecting the Right Backshell

Selecting the Right Backshell

Backshells are indispensable components in mission-critical applications, offering vital strain relief and cable support in challenging environments. These adapters are designed to protect connectors and wires from physical stress, including strain, shock, vibration, and even electromagnetic interference (EMI) or radio frequency interference (RFI) in some cases. While certain connectors come equipped with built-in backshells, most require the careful selection of a suitable backshell for optimal performance and durability.

When choosing the appropriate backshell for your application, consider the following design considerations:

1. Orientation
Consider the required orientation of the backshell. Options include straight (0°), 45°, or 90° right angles. The choice depends on the specific application. Straight backshells are suitable for standard applications where the connector exits from a wall or panel. On the other hand, 90° and 45° backshells are ideal for space-constrained environments.

2. Environmental Protection
Determine the level of environmental protection required. Backshells can be categorized as either environmental or non-environmental. Environmental backshells are designed for harsh environments and come with sealing grommets and grommet followers to provide a protective barrier against water, sand, wind, shock, and other environmental hazards. These are commonly used in aircraft, ground vehicles, and applications demanding robust environmental protection.

3. EMI/RFI Shielding
Consider the need for EMI/RFI shielding. EMI/RFI non-environmental circular connector backshells provide protection against electromagnetic and radio frequency interference in controlled environments. These backshells offer cable support, high corrosion resistance, and electrical continuity. However, they may not be suitable for harsh environments. Choose the appropriate shielding option based on the specific requirements, such as braided shields, foil shields, or a combination of both. Shielding ensures that electromagnetic and radio frequency fields do not interfere with cable operation, optimizing performance and minimizing potential interference.

4. Strain Relief Type
Evaluate the required strain relief mechanism. Cable clamps and heat shrink products offer essential protection and insulation for wires and connectors. Cable clamps provide strain relief, preventing wires from being pulled out of the connector. Additionally, endbells provide waterproof protection and prevent dirt and moisture contamination. Heat shrink products serve multiple purposes, including insulation, strain relief (especially at terminations), and protection against abrasion and mechanical wear. Heat shrink boots, specifically, offer insulation and environmental protection for wires, making them suitable for various applications. Straight boots are available in different types, suitable for circular connectors, D-type connectors, and multiway transitions.

By considering these key factors, you can select the right backshell that meets the specific requirements of your application, ensuring reliable performance, durability, and protection for your connector-cable assembly. you require assistance in selecting the right backshell or would like to obtain a quotation, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
